Germany 1958. Reconstruction, economic miracle. Johann Radmann has just recently been appointed Public Prosecutor. When journalist Thomas Gnielka causes a ruckus in the courthouse, Johann pricks up his ears: a friend of Thomas' identified a teacher as a former Auschwitz guard, but no one is interested in prosecuting him. Johann begins to examine the case – and lands in a web of repression and denial. At the time, "Auschwitz" was a word, which those who even heard of it, wanted to forget. Only Prosecutor General Fritz Bauer encourages Johann. When Johann and Thomas find documents that lead to the perpetrators, Bauer officially entrusts all investigations to Johann, who is drawn so deeply into the case that he is blind to everything else – even to his love Marlene. Johann oversteps boundaries, falls out with friends, colleagues, and allies, and is sucked deeper into a labyrinth of lies in his search for the truth. But what he ultimately brings to light will change the country forever…
